Teatime

In times when I need comfort, I love to have a nice hot cup of tea.  I was having one of these “tea times” a few days ago.  I got out my teakettle and polished it up, rinsed it out, filled it with water and sat it on the stove.  I continued working in the kitchen.   I then got out one of my favorite mugs and then looked for a little teatime snack.  Running out of other things to do, I stood next to the stove and just waited.  No whistle came.  I thought it had been more than enough time for me to get the hot water I needed so I checked the kettle.  It was icy cold as I had forgotten to turn on the burner.  Laughing at myself, I said loudly, “how can I expect to get what I wanted when I didn’t do what I needed to do to get it.”  As I heard myself say these words, I knew God was speaking to me and I had to share this you.

God is still a just God and sometimes we expect grace and favor, though it is never earned, before we had done our part.  As I did everything imaginable in the kitchen except turn on the stove, there are problems in our life that we skirt around and we do everything except what God has assigned us to do.  Yet we still want to reap a reward.

In Luke 12:48, we are told “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”  This comes easy for some of us.  We will give our last penny to a stranger, write a check we can’t cover to give food to a struggling family and use our last drop of gas to take someone home.  This is what we’ll do for near strangers, we do ever more for people we love really like and are close to us.

Proverbs 3:5 states “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he will direct thy paths”.  How often is God directing us to walk somewhere out of our comfort zone?  That business you never started.  That man who broke your heart and you refuse to forgive.  Your backstabbing friend who is in need and you ignore.  Your rebellious child who needs more of your attention.  Your church group that you just don’t have time for.  The girl you see struggling to find her way but you are too embarrassed to share your testimony with her.  Where is God directing your path?  What does He want you to do that you just can’t bring yourself to do?  Fix this, be in His perfect will for you and watch Him move those obstacles in your life.

As the body of Christ, we have to share our struggles as well as our triumphs.  Our challenges and our victories to keep each other edified, encouraged and focused on the kingdom of Heaven.  Doing God’s will and allowing Him to use us provides favor but, more importantly, helps others be encouraged and builds their faith.  Faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of God, Romans 10:17.  We must live God’s word as Jesus did.  Then we can enjoy our teatime because we have put in the work and done our Father’s will.  With that, may you have a blessed day of rest this Labor Day and continue the work of your heavenly Father.
